There are different types of manual wheelchairs. First of all, if you have sufficient or very good upper arm function, you can use a self propelled manual wheelchair. The weight for this type of chair will start around 35 pounds, so you must be able to move more than that. Therefore, these are used for adults or for children who are old enough and strong enough to move themselves.

Lightweight manual wheelchairs are chairs that will allow you to have the best movement with the least effort. If you cannot put in much effort, and you cannot self propel in a standard wheelchair, you'll want to be sure that you get this type. Keep in mind that these are usually from 28 to 34 pounds.

Ultra lightweight wheelchairs provide you with even more mobility, and don’t require as much effort. These are for the most active individuals, and are recommended for someone who needs this ease. They start at 14 pounds, and are easy to use and transport.

Heavy duty wheelchairs are made for people who weigh anywhere from 250 to 600 pounds, depending on the type of chair and the frame. They can accommodate a larger frame, and are going to be self propelled.

Using any type of manual wheelchair is going to be something that take strength and effort. You also must have the willingness and motivation to use the wheelchair.
