Pediatric Wheelchairs
There are so many pediatric wheelchairs
available that selecting the right one takes a little bit of
research. But with some work you can find the chair that will
leave you and your child happy. Having the right chair makes it
easier for your child to navigate every day activities while
making it easier for you to take care of your child. There are
several important things to consider when you are looking at
pediatric wheelchairs.

Manual or Motorized
While it is important to consult with your child’s doctor on
which type of chair would be best, you must consider lifestyle
also. Motorized wheelchairs are a good choice for your child if
they are going to need to navigate the chair at school or in
public settings. These chairs may be more difficult if you have
to transport your child, however. They are often heavier and
bulkier for transporting.
While motorized chairs may be more difficult to transport,
the weight will make them easier if you are having to transfer
your child to another seat frequently. Discuss the benefits of
both types of chairs with your doctor.
Manual wheelchairs are good for transporting as they are
easy to collapse and take on the road. It is often easier to
find detachable hardware for these chairs. If your life is busy
and your child is independent, you may want to consider having
a choice of both types of wheelchairs.
Size
Selecting the right size chair for your child is important.
Take in mind your child’s height and weight, and decide if you
want a chair that will grow with your child, or one that you
can upgrade at later date. Many chairs offer the option of
expanding with your child by adjusting a crossbar.
Comfort
Keep in mind how many hours your child will be spending in
his wheelchair. The seat needs to support your child while
still being comfortable. The comfort will be determined by
cushion, fit and height of the footrest. Have your child tell
you when you have the settings right for the most comfortable
fit.
Style
Every child is concerned with appearance. Let your child
help make the decision on the color or design of the pediatric
wheelchair. Manufacturers have designed chairs with kids in
mind - bright colors such as pink or green are available for
your child to choose from. If you decide to add customized
cushion covers, they are available as well. Let your child add
designs to the chair, such as stickers or other creative
decorations that will make using the chair less of an
issue.
You and your child can work together to sift through the
many pediatric wheelchairs and find the right one. Working as a
team will help you overcome the challenges associated with the
disability and work towards living an independent life.
